Day 1 Summary

Day 1 at the Prairie Chess Camp

We got off to a fabulous start today. We kicked things off with a discussion about expectations for the week. Chess camp instructors and staff met Sunday night and discussed these expectations and how we will work to support those expectations.

  • #1: The safety and well-being of the students is our top priority. That means safety in the classroom, the bus, breaks, and recess. Safety includes acts of bullying in the classroom and at recess. I asked all students to show respect for each other regardless of age and skill level. With COVID-19 protocols, we have taken extra precautions. Hand sanitizer and wipes are available throughout the classrooms.

  • #2: Having fun learning chess is why we are here. Our instructors have developed a targeted lesson plan for each level of students. They teach, demonstrate, and ask students to apply in each lesson. We are proactive and intervene when they are struggling, asking, “who needs help?” We help in the classroom in the mornings and in the afternoon and we go over games with the students when they are finished. Each student maintains a folder of their work throughout the week and will bring them home on Friday.

  • #3: We maintain the school facilities that we are graciously allowed to use. I asked everyone to pick up after their snacks and lunch and to reset the chess boards when done. I am grateful for everyone’s cooperation in helping out.

The school bus pickup and drop off went right on cue (thank you Anjali and all of the other staff that helped on the ubse). We let the kids settle in this morning by playing some casual chess games before starting with our morning lessons.

Our students are split out into four groups based on age and US Chess Federation rating. Our group of new chess campers met with Alex and AJ in the morning. The other three groups rotated among three classes taught by James and Anjanli, Gokul, Joseph, and Omkar, and Erik and Anish. As the beginning group gets through the basics, they will be integrated into the daily rotation. Each group will also have a “block day” with Alex. By rotating, all our students get to work with all of our amazing instructors throughout the week. Our four main lesson topics are Tactics, Middle Game, Endgame, and Instructional Games.

In the afternoon, we played a tournament among students. We played four games at 15 minutes per player. There were four sections to the tournament. The results are posted online at https://www.chessiniowa.org/2021Camp/Day1

With the faster time control, taking notation of the game was not required. But several did. As part of the chess camp, all students are provided their own scorebook to record their games throughout the week. In future days, we will play with a slower time control and all players will record moves then review each game with staff.

Snacks, lunch, and recess went smoothly, thanks in large part to our staff of Sanmati, Audrey, and Eli. Snacks, lunch, and recess went smoothly, thanks in large part to our staff (Regan, Andre, Crissy & Sanmati). Morning snacks included a Rice Krispie Treat or a Nutri Grain Bars. We brought lunch in from Subway, and afternoon snacks included carrots and cheese heads. Apples, pears, grapes, and bananas were offered throughout the day. We had recess after lunch and at snack time we let the kids play outside and run off a little energy.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions.

Take care,

Jim

Each player has a pairing number in front of their name. The player's result and their opponent's pairing number are listed for each round. For example, "W61" means Won against player number 61.
